Golf Carts at the tournament

The Diagonal Community Scholarship Fund held its annual fund-raising golf tournament last Saturday and the day was another huge success. Congratulations to our new champions, Frank and Brian Gunsolley. The father/son duo shot a tournament record eight under par to pace the field. I had the honor of playing with them that day, and they literally were on fire. While my goal has always been to get my name on the trophy, it was clear early that we were overmatched. It was a sight to behold and they played the way a team can only hope. If one person made a bad shot, the other one came through, which is how you envision the day going. There was a point where they birdied hole number six, eagled hole seven, and birdied hole eight for a two, two, two score.

Of course, that is only a small part of why we are there. The day is to raise funds to guarantee that every student graduating from our school receives a scholarship to help pay for their college education. Well, we certainly made sure that tradition continues! 30 teams took to the course looking to have fun and raise money for our fund. Both things happened as we raised approximately $9,400.00, another new record. I keep thinking we can’t beat last year, but it happens.

We always start the day with a great lunch. As the teams come in they can smell the wonderful food being prepared. I’ve always said our cooks in this area are the best and they didn’t let us down. After our meal we got ready to play with a very light shower going on. The weather got really nice as the day rolled on, then as we were just about to finish, the sky darkened and a lot of thunder rumbled. Again, a very light rain fell for a few minutes, and again the weather cleared, allowing us to finish.

The evening concluded with the golf winners announced and then the auction began. With a lot of items to auction off we continued raising money while having a good time at it. We even had our raffle winner send the items he won back to be auctioned off, raising even more money. I can’t say enough good things about all the people that do so much to make this a success. Another big thank you to those that donate prizes for the golf and auction. It takes everyone, and boy did we have everyone. Again, thank you to everyone. As Eddie famously says, “It’s for the kids,” and the kids did all right. Thank you all.
